Fruit & Veg in Season this May

What’s new from Clements Wholesale Fruit & Veg this month…

Well we’ve certainly had some April showers in the past week or so but even the wet weather didn’t put shoppers off from visiting their local shops & farm shops – great news for smaller retailers & let’s hope it continues. This continued surge in demand has certainly kept the Clements team busy at the warehouse in Spalding.

English Asparagus is now at it’s peak & there are some great looking salad lines arriving from UK growers, right now it’s the smaller plants such as little gem that are easiest to source – a really uplifting start to the UK season.

Summer is always within touching distance when the peas & broad beans arrive. Super fresh, crisp & sweet it is definitely worth stocking these early on to show shoppers that it pays to shop local. Consumers are always on the look out for new summer lines at this time of year – we’re all trying to get there as fast as we can!

Podding these always brings back lots of memories…

Broad Beans

We promised them last month & they’ve only just arrived – stone fruit from Southern Europe. Sweet & juicy these nectarines & peaches taste just as good as they look…

Tomatoes are really starting to come in their own this month too. From super sweet cherry vine to more unusual varieties there are plenty to try.

More speciality products from the Continent to look out for include rainbow chard, radicchio & globe artichokes. All great products to try if you haven’t already – your customers are unlikely to find these in the supermarkets.

There are lots of fantastic fruit lines coming in to their own now too. Watermelons from Morocco are perfect for families with kids at home all day looking for healthy snacks & of course strawberries are always a favourite.

Back to British to round off, rhubarb & purple sprouting broccoli are still good shouts & don’t forget to keep a good stock of new potatoes – once shoppers have started on these they don’t want to go back!
